Description:

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Lead Truck Driver, the Equipment

Operator I is a non-exempt position under FLSA. The primary responsibility of this position is to

serve as a truck driver for the department and haul necessary materials and equipment to and from

job sites. Employee performs snow and ice removal functions during inclement weather.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (required):

  1. Regular and predictable attendance required;
  2. Serves as truck driver, includes maintenance of the truck and related equipment;
  3. Performs maintenance and servicing work in connection with the operations of related equipment.
  4. Transports materials and equipment to job sites, loads, hauls and stockpiles necessary materials and equipment to construction and repair sites;
  5. Removes snow and ice from roads and bridges in the winter;
  6. Spreads gravel, sand, rock, and asphalt;
  7. Performs road and bridge construction and maintenance work repairing guard rails, mowing ditches, installing and maintaining culverts and filling washouts;
  8. Provides required information on rock tickets;
  9. Maintains a daily labor and equipment record;
  10. Ensures positive public relations with citizens and co-workers;
  11. Must have and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements.

Must have and maintain a clean driving record for this position. A “clean” record is defined as:

No misdemeanor or felony convictions for traffic/vehicular offenses (such as but not limited to

DUI, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, hit and run, etc.) that are less than five (5) years old;

no more than two (2) at fault or chargeable accidents that are less than five (5) years old; no more

than two (2) traffic infractions (such as but not limited to speeding, failure to yield right of way,

etc.) that are less than one year old

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Operations machines and/or equipment as required for the job
  2. Assists other Public Works crews as needed;
  3. Assists in shop;
  4. Cuts brush along right of way;
  5. Performs any manual labor required to complete the project
  6. Reports problems to the appropriate personnel.
  7. Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

Employee shall be able to operate dump trucks, tractor trailers, loaders, rollers and other departmental equipment efficiently and safely. Must possess the ability to understand and follow oral instructions or written plans. Employee shall have the ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment or any other equivalent combinations of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, ability and skill.

PROBLEM SOLVING:

The employee is assigned recurring and routine tasks. Deviations, problems and unfamiliar situations are referred to the supervisor. The supervisor makes daily assignments defining the workday.

DECISION MAKING: This person must possess the ability to identify equipment problems and report them to the shop. Daily decisions pertaining to the safe operation of the vehicle are encountered.

SUPERVISION/ACCOUNTABILITY:

This position works independently with little direct supervision from the Pottawatomie County Road supervisor. When assisting other foremen, the employee is under their supervision. This employee has no supervisory responsibilities. Employee

is directly responsible for departmental equipment and resources, but does not participate in the annual budget process. Employee is responsible for daily record keeping for cost accounting purposes.

PERSONAL RELATIONS:

Daily contact with co-workers, general public and supervisory personnel is expected.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:

A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent, plus graduation from a vocational school is preferred. A valid Class A, Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the appropriate endorsements is required at the time of employment, plus the

ability to legally operate a County vehicle. One to two years of similar or related experience is preferred. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months of employment
