Mechanical Engineer – Low Voltage Switchgear Design (UL 891)
Location: Marietta, OH
Job Type: Direct Hire
Salary: Starting at $90,000+ (based on experience)

Role Overview

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer with hands-on experience in low-voltage switchgear design to support the development and documentation of UL 891 assemblies. This role focuses on creating detailed mechanical layouts that are compliant, manufacturable, and aligned with project requirements.

This is a highly technical position requiring direct experience with switchgear systems, strong CAD skills, and close collaboration with both engineering and production teams.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Layout Development

  • Develop mechanical designs for UL 891 switchgear assemblies
  • Create enclosure layouts, internal compartments, breaker mounting configurations, and structural components
  • Design bus compartments, cable routing paths, and service access points
  • Incorporate cooling, ventilation, and arc containment considerations into designs

Engineering Documentation

  • Produce fabrication-ready documentation, including:
    • General arrangement drawings
    • Sheet metal part drawings
    • Weldment details
    • Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Ensure all documentation aligns with UL 891 standards and internal design guidelines

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with electrical engineering to align mechanical layouts with one-line diagrams, bus design, and cable terminations
  • Participate in design reviews to resolve clearance, interference, and accessibility issues
  • Support Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) efforts

Manufacturing & Compliance Support

  • Assist production teams during build, testing, and inspection phases
  • Support UL inspections and ensure compliance documentation is complete
  • Contribute to value engineering initiatives to improve cost efficiency and overall design performance

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintain accuracy and ownership in a fast-paced production environment
  • Travel occasionally for coordination with manufacturing teams or suppliers
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 3–8+ years of experience designing low-voltage switchgear
Required Expertise:
  • Direct, hands-on experience with UL 891 switchgear design
  • Ability to independently execute designs with minimal oversight
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Switchgear enclosure and structural design
    • Breaker mounting and compartment layouts
    • Bus compartment segregation and required clearances
    • Cable entry, routing, and termination access
    • Thermal management, ventilation, and arc containment
  • Experience supporting UL inspections and compliance requirements
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar)
  • Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, weldments, and manufacturing processes
  • Strong collaboration skills across engineering and production teams
  • High attention to detail with strong documentation practices
