Associate Director – AI Policy
The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), the world's leading think tank for science and technology policy, is seeking an Associate Director to lead and expand its work on artificial intelligence (AI) policy.
The Associate Director will play a key role in shaping ITIF's research, outreach, and impact on U.S. AI policy. The ideal candidate will be an exceptional researcher and prolific writer with deep knowledge of AI policy debates, including issues such as frontier model governance, national security, export controls, data policy, intellectual property, compute and infrastructure, R&D funding, standards, regulatory design, and technology adoption. The Associate Director will help lead projects, set research priorities, engage policymakers, and represent ITIF in high-level policy forums.
This position will be based in Washington, DC, and will report to ITIF's incoming president Daniel Castro. The salary for this position is $110,000 – $155,000, depending on experience.
Essential Responsibilities
- Lead the development and execution of ITIF's AI policy research agenda, including flagship reports, policy briefs, op-eds, blog posts, and public comments.
- Produce rigorous, timely, and persuasive analysis for policymakers, industry leaders, and media.
- Engage directly with members of Congress, executive branch officials, agency staff, and other stakeholders on AI-related legislative and regulatory issues.
- Organize and participate in briefings, roundtables, conferences, and public events in Washington and nationally.
- Manage research projects from conception to publication, including supervising staff as appropriate.
- Contribute to fundraising efforts by developing proposals, cultivating donor relationships, and communicating research impact.
- Represent ITIF in media interviews, public debates, and coalition engagements.
- Monitor and analyze emerging AI policy developments in the United States and internationally.
Qualifications
- Graduate degree in public policy, economics, political science, law, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in technology policy, government, think tanks, industry, or academia.
- Demonstrated expertise in AI policy, including a strong understanding of current U.S. legislative and regulatory debates.
- Proven record of producing high-quality written work for policymaker audiences, including reports, op-eds, or legislative analysis.
- Excellent research, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Superior communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Strong professional network in Washington policy circles.
