GI Alliance is seeking a Medical Assistant to fulfill the role of FibroScan/Shear Wave Elastography Technician (Liver Elastography Technician).

This position requires reliable transportation and travel between four clinic locations within the Greater Richmond area to perform FibroScan/Shear Wave Elastography examinations. The technician will follow a rotating schedule to provide coverage at each site as needed. Mileage and toll expense incurred during work-related travel between clinic locations will be reimbursed in accordance with company policy.



Job Summary


A FibroScan/Shear Wave Elastography Technician performs non-invasive liver stiffness and fat measurement tests using the FibroScan/Shear Wave Elastography system to help assess liver fibrosis and steatosis. The technician prepares patients, operates the device, ensures accurate measurements, and documents results for physicians—often in hepatology, gastroenterology, or liver transplant clinics. The role requires strong patient care skills and attention to diagnostic accuracy.


Key Responsibilities


  • Perform liver elastography examinations using the FibroScan/Shear Wave Elastography device.

  • Prepare patients for testing, including explaining procedures and positioning them properly.

  • Verify patient identity and review relevant medical history before testing.

  • Ensure accurate probe placement and obtain valid measurements according to clinical protocols.

  • Monitor patient comfort and safety during the procedure.

  • Record and upload results into the electronic medical record (EMR).

  • Maintain equipment cleanliness, calibration, and functionality.

  • Communicate results and any testing concerns to physicians or supervising providers.

  • Follow infection control, privacy, and safety guidelines (HIPAA compliance).

  • Assist with clinic workflow, scheduling, and patient education regarding liver health.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications


  • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate degree in healthcare preferred).

  • Certification or training in diagnostic testing, medical assisting, ultrasound, or radiology (preferred).

  • Experience working in gastroenterology, hepatology, or imaging clinics (preferred).

  • Basic knowledge of liver disease and non-invasive diagnostic procedures (preferred).

    Qualifications
    Education: High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED), medical assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution, or a college course in medical assisting.
    Experience: Minimum of five years of recent experience working in a medical facility as a medical assistant required. Preferably 5 years of experience internally at GI Alliance. Experience working in a Gastroenterology practice is preferred.
    Requirements for Level III Status:
  • Should be a leader and viewed as a leader by other staff.
  • No performance or disciplinary actions in last year.
  • Serves as mentor/trainer for new hires in field.
  • Considered as subject-matter expert in areas by peers, management, and physicians.

  • Other Performance Requirements:
  • Knowledge of health care field and EMR systems.
  • Skill in performing medical assistance tasks appropriately.
  • Skill in written and verbal communications.
  • Skill in understanding patient education needs by effectively sharing information with patients and families.
  • Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care practices and procedures.
