Diagnostic Services Purpose:
To deliver safe, timely, accurate, and technically rigorous diagnostic analysis with clear, actionable maintenance and monitoring recommendations that minimize downtime and extend the useful life of critical electrical assets.
The Technical Specialist I plays a critical role in SDMyers’ Diagnostic Services function by ensuring the technical accuracy, consistency, and integrity of laboratory test results. This position is responsible for reviewing and validating diagnostic data, applying industry standards, determining pass/fail outcomes, and translating complex technical findings into precise, customer-facing reports. The role also serves as a technical resource to customers and internal sales teams, supporting informed decision-making related to electrical equipment reliability and maintenance.
Key ResponsibilitiesReview, validate, and interpret laboratory test results in accordance with established SDMyers diagnostic procedures and criteria
Determine pass/fail outcomes using DSApp while meeting defined quality and turnaround time expectations
Apply applicable industry standards (IEEE, IEC, ASTM) when evaluating test data and recommendations
Prepare, edit, and finalize detailed technical reports using SOP formats and Microsoft Word
Assist with the development, documentation, and ongoing maintenance of Diagnostic Services SOPs and procedures
Collaborate with laboratory management on periodic split-sample testing and quality verification initiatives
Document customer correspondence and maintain accurate technical records and archives
Communicate rush and critical test results to sales teams and customers via phone and email to support timely follow-up
Provide clear, professional technical guidance and testing recommendations to internal and external customers
Identify resampling or retesting requirements and communicate recommendations with supporting technical rationale
Support continuous improvement initiatives related to diagnostic processes, data quality, and reporting programs
Participate in technical training, meetings, and industry conferences related to electrical equipment testing and maintenance
Perform additional duties as assigned in support of Diagnostic Services objectives
Bachelor’s degree in a technical or scientific discipline preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience with SDMyers testing procedures preferred
Prior experience as a Lab Technician II or higher with demonstrated quality and production performance is a plus
Foundational knowledge of chemistry and laboratory-based testing methodologies
Working knowledge of electrical equipment diagnostics and oil analysis principles
Familiarity with applicable industry standards (IEEE, IEC, ASTM)
Understanding of laboratory instrumentation and analytical processes used within SDMyers
General knowledge of oil processing services and their impact on equipment performance
Strong understanding of laboratory workflows, data integrity, and quality control processes
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Experience with Transformer Dashboard and Salesforce preferred
Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and technical consistency
High level of integrity, initiative, and professional judgment
Strong team orientation with a commitment to meeting deadlines, punctuality, and effective communication
Completion of SDMyers T&E courses preferred
Primarily office-based role supporting laboratory and diagnostic operations
Eligible for limited hybrid remote work, based on business needs and performance
Ability to sit for extended periods while maintaining focus on detailed technical data
Occasional standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching throughout the workday
Regular use of verbal, visual, and auditory communication
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds
