Maintenance Assistant
Job Title: Maintenance Assistant
Location: Chicago Plant, Travel to Romeoville when required
Department: Maintenance
Pay Type: Hourly, Non-Exempt
Job Summary
The Maintenance Assistant is primarily responsible for performing preventative maintenance on all equipment and the building. This position directly supports the Maintenance Technicians.
Essential Functions: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty listed below satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Duties/Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
- Assists maintenance technicians in making the necessary corrective actions in their area of expertise.
- Provides housekeeping duties in the repair shop and around equipment being serviced.
- Assists with fire watch while team members are performing hot work actions.
- Records and reports preventative maintenance tasks on a weekly schedule, such as cleaning air filters, and water filters, and applying grease or oil to lubricate machinery.
- Continuously improves preventative maintenance documents and schedules.
- Follows all maintenance safety protocols to ensure all team members operate safely at all times, always leading by example.
- Performs routine calibrations and documents results.
- Immediately inform the supervisor or manager of any safety-related issues, damaged equipment, or needed improvements.
- Clearly understands and performs all procedures for equipment training and must attend all required training sessions (including safety training).
- Works closely with maintenance mechanics/technicians.
- Drive a culture of continuous improvement through the support of business and process improvements.
- Other duties as assigned, including general housekeeping.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Able to safely use basic hand tools and power tools.
- Preferably has knowledge of basic electricity, plumbing, piping, mechanical systems, painting, and housekeeping (5S).
- Some experience with welding, cutting torch, and plasma cutter preferred but not required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure. (Using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.)
- Genuinely wants to learn trade skills and aspires to be a maintenance technician.
- Must be able to work overtime as needed.
- Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent time management skills with the proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong understanding of applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements and other related safety policies and best practices.
- Must have reliable transportation.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required (trade school).
- 1 or more years of experience performing preventative maintenance on equipment and machines preferred but not required.
- 2 or more years of sit-down propane forklift and scissor lift experience is required.
Work Environment: This job operates inside a warehouse and outside the facility where the temperature may vary.
Physical Demands:
- Prolonged periods of standing per shift.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Must be able to maneuver facility on unforgiving surfaces.
- Must be able to work in hot and cold climates and in an environment with many noises and odors.
- Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as ear plugs, safety vest, hard hat, steel toe shoes, gloves, and other job specific required PPE.
