About This Position
The Staff Accountant for the Dayton Art Institute plays a vital role in supporting the financial health and integrity of the organization. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting core accounting functions and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and organizational policies.
The Staff Accountant contributes to timely and accurate financial reporting, supports audit and close processes, and collaborates across departments to ensure efficient financial operations. This role requires both technical accounting proficiency and the ability to operate effectively in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare and maintain accurate financial records in compliance with accounting standards and organizational policies.
- Perform general ledger accounting, including journal entries, account reconciliations and supporting schedules.
- Support month-end and year-end closing processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
- Process accounts payable and receivable transactions, ensuring timely payments and collections.
- Support the preparation of financial statements, and contribute to budget, and forecast development.
- Assist with variance analysis and provide insight into differences between actual and budgeted figures.
- Support internal and external audits by preparing documentation and responding to requests.
- Maintain fixed asset records, including additions, disposals, and depreciation schedules.
- Assist in the preparation of tax filings and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Monitor cash flow and support liquidity tracking for operational needs.
- Partner with internal teams to support financial aspects of special events and programs
QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of accounting, preferably in non-profit environment.
- Proficiency in accounting software (Blackbaud experience, strongly preferred) and MS Office, particularly Excel.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, and financial reporting (experience with endowment accounting is a plus)
- CPA or CMA designation preferred.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail and Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role is primarily based in a museum environment, with regular movement throughout offices, galleries, storage areas, and other public facing spaces. The position may require sitting or standing for extended periods and communicating effectively in person and through electronic communication. Occasional lifting of materials up to approximately 20 lbs may be required. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, or special events depending on museum programming and operational needs.
