Job Description:
The Director of Facilities Management provides strategic leadership, direction, and oversight for all campus facilities operations across the College’s multiple locations totaling approximately 450,000 square feet. The Director is responsible for the comprehensive management of custodial services, grounds maintenance, mail services, fleet operations, maintenance services, preventative maintenance, special projects and other duties as assigned.
Working closely with the Executive Director Facilities Planning Construction and Facilities Operations, this position develops and implements long-range facilities plans aligned with institutional priorities, ensures regulatory compliance, oversees budgeting and financial stewardship, and fosters a culture of safety, customer service, operational excellence, and continuous improvement. The Director serves as the primary facilities liaison to senior leadership, campus departments, public agencies, and external vendors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Administration
- Provide overall leadership and direction for Facilities Management operations across all campus locations.
- Develop and implement short- and long-range facilities plans aligned with the College’s strategic goals.
- Develop a Five-Year Deferred Maintenance Plan and annually evaluate a maintenance plan for equipment and buildings.
- Advise senior leadership on facilities planning, infrastructure needs, risk management, and capital priorities.
- Prepare and present reports, recommendations, and updates to executive leadership.
- Meet with or serve on College and community committees and boards, as appropriate.
Operations Oversight
- Direct all facilities functions including maintenance, custodial services, grounds, snow/ice removal, mail services, fleet management, and event support.
- Ensure effective administration of the Asset Essentials work order and asset management system, including reporting, analytics, preventive maintenance scheduling, and performance monitoring.
- Manage transportation shuttle ensuring students, faculty and staff are provided safe, efficient transport to and from the Charlestown and Chelsea campuses. Review contract, inspection logs, ridership data, arrival and departure data, complaints, suggestions and solutions.
- Oversee campus fleet programs to ensure safety compliance and operational efficiency.
- Ensure timely and effective facility set-ups for academic programs, community events, and special initiatives.
- Monitor service delivery standards and implement operational improvements.
Budget & Financial Management
- Develop and manage the departmental operating budget.
- Monitor expenditures, ensure fiscal responsibility, and implement cost-control strategies.
- Oversee procurement processes, bid documents, vendor selection, and contract management in accordance with public procurement laws.
- Identify and pursue cost savings, energy efficiency initiatives, and sustainability opportunities.
Leadership & Staff Management
- Directly supervise all facilities maintenance personnel, contract maintenance employees, sub-contractors working on equipment and systems.
- Provide leadership in recruitment, performance evaluation, discipline, and professional development.
- Promote a culture of accountability, safety, collaboration, and customer service excellence.
- Ensure staff training in regulatory compliance, safety standards, and best practices.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations (including OSHA, ADA, environmental regulations, and EEO requirements).
- Oversee safety protocols and risk mitigation efforts across facilities operations.
- Maintain appropriate documentation, inspections, certifications, and reporting requirements.
Emergency Preparedness & Response
- Serve as a key member of the College’s emergency response team.
- Provide leadership during campus emergencies, severe weather events, and after-hours incidents.
- Ensure continuity of operations planning for facilities-related functions.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or related field.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of progressively responsible facilities management experience, including supervisory and budget oversight experience.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships in a diverse environment.
- Working knowledge of building, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
Preferred Requirement:
- Experience in higher education or public sector facilities management.
- Knowledge of Massachusetts public procurement laws and contracting processes.
- Professional certification such as Certified Facility Manager (CFM), Certified Educational Facilities Professional (CEFP), or equivalent.
- Demonstrated commitment to sustainability initiatives and energy management programs.

Salary: $115,000 - $130,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
