IRB Associate Director

In this role, you will support the oversight and administration of human subject research review processes within a complex academic environment. You will ensure that all research activities comply with federal regulations and institutional policies governing ethical research practices. Acting as a key member of the IRB operations team, you will help facilitate the full lifecycle of IRB submissions, from initial review through final determination and communication. This position plays an essential role in safeguarding research integrity while supporting faculty and students engaged in human subjects research. You will interact regularly with researchers, committee members, and institutional stakeholders, ensuring clarity, compliance, and efficiency in all processes. The role requires strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.

Accountabilities

In this role, you will support the administration and coordination of Institutional Review Board activities, ensuring that all human subject research applications are reviewed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with federal and institutional requirements. You will contribute to the smooth functioning of IRB operations and communication across researchers and committee members.

  • Assist in the processing and administrative review of IRB applications across multiple campuses in accordance with federal regulations
  • Conduct preliminary reviews of submissions to ensure compliance with ethical research standards and institutional policies
  • Review exemption and modification requests and determine appropriate routing for IRB evaluation
  • Coordinate distribution of applications to IRB members and support preparation for committee review meetings
  • Draft meeting minutes and prepare official correspondence communicating IRB decisions and required contingencies
  • Respond to inquiries from students, faculty, and researchers regarding IRB processes and requirements
  • Maintain and update IRB databases and records to ensure accuracy and accessibility
  • Support training sessions for students and faculty on IRB procedures and compliance expectations
Requirements

This position requires strong knowledge of human subjects research regulations and IRB processes, combined with excellent organizational and communication skills. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, collaborative, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a regulated academic environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 3 years of direct experience in IRB administration or related research compliance role
  • Knowledge of OHRP regulations and ethical principles governing human subject research
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for interaction with faculty, students, and committees
  • Excellent analytical, time management, and multitasking abilities
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively in a team environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, including Word and Excel
  • Certified IRB Professional or willingness to obtain certification within 1 year
