About This Position
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Oncology Infusion Registered Nurse (RN) is a compassionate and experienced clinician responsible for implementing individualized care plans, recommending patient interventions, and collaborating with an interdisciplinary healthcare team. This role works closely with pharmacy staff, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians to deliver high-quality infusion care and document outcomes. The RN promotes patient safety and continuity by understanding patient needs and guiding them through the healthcare journey, minimizing delays or complications.
CORE ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform central line dressing changes, blood draws, flushes, and start IVs; monitor for infection and communicate with providers.
- Safely administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products, IV medications, hydration, and electrolyte repletion per protocols and regulations.
- Insert Foley catheters, administer intravascular chemotherapy, and perform therapeutic phlebotomy and type & cross for transfusions.
- Monitor and evaluate responses to treatments; provide patient education, symptom management, and home monitoring support.
- Coordinate and track injections, new patient consults, and referrals for VNA, hospice, and home services in collaboration with providers.
- Support patients using cold caps; handle prescription refills, triage calls, and assist with emergencies.
- Assess psychosocial needs and bereavement risks; develop and provide patient education materials.
- Implement care plans, monitor interventions, and ensure documentation in EMR is complete.
- Verify prior authorizations and collaborate with pharmacy on medication management and inventory.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program required.
- At least 1 year of oncology and/or infusion nursing experience preferred
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state (required)
- ONS bio/chemo certification required within 2 months of hire
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) – preferred
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification – required
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES
- Solid understanding of oncology and hematology conditions, treatments, and symptom management.
- Proficient in clinical triage protocols, including assessing symptom severity and guiding appropriate care pathways.
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and documentation standards in electronic health records (EHR), such as EPIC.
