Systems Architect IV

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Systems Architect IV (Lead) provides advanced technical leadership in the design, standardization, and evolution of the organization’s infrastructure and platform environments. The role is responsible for architecting secure, scalable, and highly available systems that align with business objectives, regulatory requirements, and operational best practices. The Lead Systems Architect serves as a trusted advisor across technical teams, ensuring architectural consistency while enabling innovation and delivery.

This position operates at both a strategic and hands-on capacity; defining architectural templates and standards, guiding high-impact initiatives, resolving complex cross-domain challenges, and influencing technology direction without direct authority. The role requires deep technical expertise, strong systems thinking, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. At the Lead level, the role will require strong skills in mentorship, coaching, and training for peers, colleagues on other teams, and leadership in order to empower the entire organization to rise alongside the modern systems being implemented.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Design and lead implementation of complex, multi-domain system architectures across infrastructure, network, cloud, and platform environments.
  2. Define and maintain architectural standards, patterns, and reference designs to ensure consistency, scalability, and security.
  3. Lead architecture reviews and provide expert guidance on proposed technical solutions; identifying risks, trade-offs, and optimization opportunities.
  4. Partner with security, infrastructure, application programming, and operations teams to ensure systems are secure by design and operationally resilient.
  5. Architect solutions with appropriate considerations for availability, performance, capacity, lifecycle management, and cost optimization.
  6. Promote and guide automation, scripting, and infrastructure-as-code practices to improve efficiency and reduce operational risk.
  7. Resolve complex technical issues spanning multiple systems, teams, or domains of expertise to provide authoritative technical direction.
  8. Evaluate emerging technologies and provide strategic recommendations aligned with organizational goals.
  9. Develop clear technical documentation, diagrams, and design artifacts to support implementation, operation, and governance.
  10. Mentor infrastructure, database, networking, programming, and other technical teams, raising technical maturity and fostering a culture of architectural innovation and excellence.
  11. Communicate architectural vision, decisions, and trade-offs effectively to leadership and key stakeholders

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent field experience.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 7 years’ experience in systems administration, enterprise architecture, or an equivalent role with increasing responsibility.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Advanced experience in supporting architecture in Microsoft Windows Server environments, including hypervisor administration, containerization and container orchestration, and failover clustering with high availability.
  2. Deep experience designing and operating solutions in a hybrid on-premise and cloud infrastructure (Preferring Microsoft Azure), including virtual networking, identity and authentication integration, storage, compute, and platform services.
  3. Demonstrated experience architecting hybrid environments integrating on-premise Windows infrastructure with cloud services.
  4. Strong scripting and automation expertise using languages such as PowerShell and Python, including development of reusable modules, automation frameworks, and configuration management scripting
  5. Experience implementing Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) leveraging frameworks such as Terraform, including modular design, state management, and CI/CD integration.
  6. Experience designing, deploying, and optimizing database platforms including Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL, with understanding of availability, backup and recovery, and performance considerations.
  7. Experience designing and supporting Continuous Integration / Continuous Development (CI/CD) workflows, including automated build, testing, deployment, and rollback strategies for infrastructure and application platforms.
  8. Familiarity with DevOps practices, including version control, branching strategies, artifact management, and pipeline governance.
  9. Experience implementing secure-by-design principles within Windows and Azure environments, including Identity Management (IdM), Role-based access control (RBAC), and privileged access management (PAM).
  10. Experience developing and maintaining system monitoring, logging, and observability strategies across hybrid infrastructure.
  11. Demonstrated ability to evaluate emerging technologies and communicate strategic vision and tactical planning to technical and non-technical audiences.
  12. Experience working in regulated environments with an understanding of compliance, risk management, and audit readiness.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:

  1. Physical activity that often requires keyboarding and phone work.

  3. Physical activity that sometimes requires walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, kneeling and/or twisting.
  4. Physical activity that sometimes requires lifting, pushing and/or pulling over 20 lbs.
  5. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust and focus.
  6. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment.
  7. Must hear and speak well enough to conduct business over the telephone or face to face for long periods of time in English.

MINIMUM ENVIRONMENTAL EXPECTATIONS:

This job operates in both an office environment and in a medical facility and requires regular walking to various locations around the hospital/clinic. It involves frequent interruptions, competing priorities and significant interaction with people which can be stressful at times. This position requires flexibility with days and hours, along with ability to be on-call and travel as needed (including nights and weekends as appropriate).
