Purpose: The Engineering Manager leads the data engineering team in the Data Systems and Analytics Department (DSA). This position will oversee the analytics tech stack that services multiple departments in SEIU. The Engineering Manager will split their time between writing code and playing a key role in developing and guiding engineers.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities: (Any one position may not include all of the specific duties and responsibilities listed. Leads and manages the team that is responsible for working with teams across DSA and SEIU to build out the infrastructure needed to make data available. Primary responsibilities include:
- Supervise the data engineer(s) with an emphasis on helping them grow their technical and professional skills
- Build and maintain systems to make data available to everyone in DSA and extend self-service capabilities to key stakeholders
- Design data infrastructure that is reliable and secure, while also being a judicious use of SEIU resources
- Work with other SEIU Departments to design and build data systems for high-priority campaigns
- Consult on new projects under the guidance of the DSA Deputy Director of Analytics and Engineering and in collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders on creative solutions to engineering challenges
- Use of Agile practices to document and monitor the progress of development.
- Review code to ensure that SEIU is using development best practices.
- Performs other duties as required to support the department and its mission
Contacts: Includes SEIU staff, affiliate staff, local union staff, SEIU field staff, and outside partners and vendors.
Direction and Decision Making: This position reports to the DSA Deputy Director of Analytics and Engineering in the Data Systems and Analytics Department. Exercises independent judgment and makes decisions that may determine the success or failure of SEIU’s data engineering program.
Education and Experience: At least 6 years of related work experience and 1 year of supervisory experience or or combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Strong technical background in building data pipelines and ETL/ELT workflows
- Experience managing multiple stakeholders and external vendors and can clearly articulate risks and dependencies on projects
- 6+ years of experience working primarily in Data/Analytics Engineering
- A deep understanding of SQL and popular data warehouses, such as Redshift
- 3+ years of experience with Python 3 (3.6+ preferred)
- Strong understanding of REST API Interactions including familiarity with concepts like: Query Parameters, Error Handling, JSON, OpenAPI/SwaggerUI, REST Verbs
- Familiarity with Analytics, streaming, ETL/ELT, and/or Member Data Management concepts
- Experience in an Agile Environment, preferably using JIRA
- A high level of judgment, leadership, and commitment to the goals of SEIU and its leaders, including SEIU’s goal of becoming an anti-racist organization
Preferred Skills
- Experience with: AWS (EKS, S3, EC2, MSK, Aurora, EBS, Lambda), Github, Airbyte, DBT, Prefect
- Experience with moderate to large codebases and microservices
- Knowledge of labor unions and their operations is helpful
Physical Requirements: Work is generally performed in an office setting. Extended hours and extensive travel required.
