HVAC Technician at VULCAN MECHANICAL SERVICES INC – Birmingham, Alabama
About This Position
LEVEL 1
· Possess a technical knowledge to troubleshoot, repair and maintain, HVAC mechanical systems. This would include but not be limited to roof top package units and split systems 25 tons and under. This would also include exhaust fans and pump motors.
· Technician will be available for after hour service calls and enter the on-call schedule.
· Must have excellent customer service skills.
· Continue technical training in classroom and personal studies to meet the responsibilities of a B technician. This will be monitored during each review for improvement.
· Demonstrate capability of handling heavy workload of service calls and preventive maintenance as assigned.
· Upon receiving a customer complaint, the B technician will learn to follow systematic questioning techniques and relate answers to the functioning of the system.
· Avoid needless callbacks by checking complete system before leaving the job.
· Learn to use proper tools and instruments for troubleshooting. Make sure proper tools are always on the service vehicle before starting a job.
· Avoid inefficiencies by always stocking your service vehicle with shop inventory and stock.
· Maintain a clean driving record.
· Maintain the service vehicle in a neat and clean manner.
· Maintain a clean safety record and understanding of correct safety procedures for each facility you service.
· Dependability/reliability (including work absenteeism/tardiness).
· Always maintain a positive workplace attitude.
LEVEL 2
· Possess a technical knowledge and experience level to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain HVAC mechanical systems 50 tons and under.
· Keep technical knowledge and ability up to date regarding commercial and industrial HVAC equipment. Search out and read applicable manuals and online sources to strengthen proper maintenance and repair procedures.
· When presented with a problem, know what to do, and why, and whether to repair or replace.
· Upon receiving a customer complaint, follow systematic questioning techniques and relate answers to the functioning of the system.
· When faced with a seemingly unsolvable problem, seek out help and solve the problem before leaving the job.
· Know how to use proper tools and instruments for more advanced troubleshooting.
· After discussing with Supervisor or Service Manager, give assurance to customer that the problem is fixed, explaining cause and remedy.
· Look for SPOT opportunities in support of meeting Operational team goals. Assist sales/dispatching in pricing spot work.
· Demonstrate ability to accurately determine job priorities by:
1. Help with scheduling your jobs and the pickup of materials for the job. Also, if leading a job make sure everyone is informed of the plan to complete the job.
2. Handling interruptions in stride.
3. Having the proper tools, materials, and scheduled tasking when arriving at the job site
· Work with other technicians by sharing knowledge and experience. This could be of a technical nature or specific issues related to a facility.
Technical Knowledge and Experience
? Must have completed these courses. (Basic electricity; Basic refrigeration; Gas and Electric heat; Heat Pump trouble shooting) with a minimum of 80%. A trade school associate degree could take the place of this qualification decided by the service manager. Minimum of 1 year field experience in combination with classroom qualifications.
? Knowledge/experience using a vacuum and micron gauge.
? Knowledge/experience using a recovery system.
? Knowledge/experience using an electronic leak detector. Also, able to add leak detecting dye to a refrigerant system to locate hard to find leaks.
? Knowledge/experience using a volt/ampere meter.
? Use proper techniques to correctly charge refrigerant systems including superheat and sub-cooling.
? Knowledge/experience of measuring and setting gas pressures on various types of natural gas systems.
? Knowledge/experience understanding airflow standards, measurements, and instruments.
