The Community Director is a full-time, 11-month, live-in professional staff member responsible for leading a residential community of up to 600 first-year and/or upper-class students at Clark University. This position works a minimum of 40 hours per week and requires regular evening and weekend commitments, including participation in a rotating on-call schedule to support after-hours crisis response and student safety.

The Community Director plays a key role in fostering a student-centered, inclusive, and educational residential experience aligned with the mission of Residential Life & Housing and the Division of Student Success. The position supervises 8-15 Resident Advisers and provides leadership in residential education, student support, conduct administration, housing operations, and community engagement. The Community Director collaborates closely with campus partners to promote student success, retention, and holistic development.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Residential Education & Community Development (35%)

  • Leads the development and implementation of a comprehensive Residential Curriculum within the assigned community.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates 8-15 Resident Advisers through regular one-on-one meetings, weekly staff meetings, and ongoing coaching.
  • Oversees departmental committees, including leadership development, programming plans, and budget management.
  • Ensures the delivery and assessment of educational, social, and community-building initiatives that promote belonging, engagement, and student development.
  • Maintains high visibility within the residential community and collaborates with faculty and campus partners to enhance the student experience.

Student Support, Conduct, & Crisis Management (25%)

  • Serves as a University Hearing Officer, adjudicating student conduct cases in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Participates in the professional on-call rotation, responding to emergencies, policy violations, and crisis situations.
  • Serves as a case manager within the Care Team, attending weekly meetings and coordinating support plans for students experiencing academic, personal, or housing-related challenges.
  • Provides referrals, follow-up, and documentation to ensure holistic student support and community safety.

Housing Operations & Administrative Management (20%)

  • Supports the operational management of assigned residential facilities in collaboration with the Assistant Director for Housing Operations or designee.
  • Coordinates hall openings and closings.
  • Manages occupancy processes, including room assignments, room changes, room condition reports, health and safety inspections, and damage billing.
  • Submits and tracks maintenance requests in partnership with Facilities.
  • Manages programming and staff development budgets.
  • Maintains accurate records and contributes to departmental assessment and reporting efforts.

Departmental Leadership & Divisional Engagement (15%)

  • Contributes to departmental initiatives including RA recruitment, selection, training, and ongoing assessment efforts.
  • Serves on committees and participates in divisional and university-wide programs such as Orientation, Opening Weekend, Family Weekend, and Commencement.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to support student retention and success.
  • Promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and student voice within residential communities.
  • Communicates regularly with supervisors regarding community trends, risks, and strategic priorities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of departmental and divisional goals.


Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Development, Student Personnel or related field
  • Flexible and adaptable, high-energy approach to student development and proven ability to engage students.
  • Strong understanding of student development.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and fostering a residential environment that supports a diverse student body.
  • Ability and willingness to live on campus and serve in an on-call rotation for student emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous residential life experience at the RA or professional level.
  • Knowledge of facilities operations or coordination in a residential campus environment.

Additional Information:

Expected Hiring Range: $50,242.12 to $55,238.82

The compensation for this position will be determined based on factors that include available budget, internal equity, and the selected candidate's qualifications, experience, education, and other job-related credentials. This range represents Clark University's good-faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting consistent with Clark's compensation philosophy and internal alignment.
