About This Position
Unit Leader – Camp Funkist (Ages 4–8) rooted in the YWCA’s core values of inclusion, integrity, advocacy, and equity, the Unit Leader plays a vital role in creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging camp experience for campers ages 4–8. This position works directly with campers while providing daily supervision, guidance, and mentorship to group counselors. The Unit Leader collaborates closely with the Camp Program Director and camp leadership team to plan, organize, and implement a high-quality, developmentally appropriate camp program. This role supports an inclusive camp culture, models ethical and professional behavior, and ensures equitable opportunities for all campers. The Unit Leader represents Camp Funkist and the YWCA in a positive, respectful, and professional manner while building strong relationships with campers, families, and colleagues.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise, support, and mentor group counselors and Counselors in Training (CITs), modeling positive and professional behavior in all interactions
- Work directly with campers to support social, emotional, and developmental growth
- Assist with staff recruitment by providing input and recommendations for prospective counselors
- Attend, support, and actively contribute to pre-camp training sessions
- Develop and manage counselor work schedules
- Organize camper groups by grade level and developmental ability with strong attention to detail
- Collaborate with the Camp Program Director and leadership team to implement daily programming
- Engage with families in a welcoming and professional manner, addressing questions and concerns as they arise
Qualifications:
Minimum 5 years experience in youth programming & development and/or summer day camp program with minimum of 2 years in a group supervisory capacity.
Licensing and/or Certifications:
First Aid/CPR preferred

- Support budget awareness and assist with program administration as needed
- Maintain flexibility in scheduling to meet program staffing and planning needs
- Exercise sound judgment and mature decision-making in a dynamic environment
- Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Provide excellent customer service and build positive, respectful working relationships with staff, leadership, families, and community members
