Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Structural Engineer with experience in heavy industrial and mining infrastructure to join our team. In this role, you will perform structural engineering tasks including determining design criteria, preparing engineering calculations and technical designs, performing computer analysis, and developing drawing layouts and construction details for complex industrial and mining facilities.
You will also direct and mentor junior engineers and engineers-in-training and check their work as required. Additional responsibilities include conducting design studies, preparing engineering reports, developing cost and schedule estimates, and supporting site assessments and construction inspections.
The successful candidate will contribute to engineering studies including Preliminary Economic Assessments (PEA), Prefeasibility Studies (PFS), and Feasibility Studies (FS) for mining projects and may support or act as a Qualified Person (QP) responsible for infrastructure and structural engineering sections of technical reports filed under NI 43-101..
Key Responsibilities
1. Leadership
- Lead and mentor team members to foster growth and enhance skills.
- Set clear goals and expectations, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
- Promote a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Independently manage projects, ensuring they stay within budget and schedule, and meet client requirements.
- Provide design work to support drafters and designers, check designs and drawings.
2. Technical Expertise
- Oversee the design and development of buildings, civil structures, industrial structures, and foundations to support them, using structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and other construction materials.
- Create engineering calculations and designs manually or using general and specialty software.
- Design for conventional loading, seismic loading, equipment vibration, hydraulic loads, and other loads as required.
- Conduct detailed feasibility studies, risk assessments, and technical evaluations.
- Support engineering design for mineral processing plants and heavy industrial infrastructure.
- Participate in PEA, PFS, and Feasibility Study level engineering evaluations.
- Conduct structural risk assessments, constructability reviews, and design optimization studies.
- Stay updated on industry advancements and integrate best practices into projects.
3. Stakeholder Communication
- Collaborate with internal teams, clients, and external partners to define project requirements.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for stakeholders, ensuring transparency and alignment.
- Prepare and deliver presentations, reports, and updates for diverse audiences.
4. Compliance and Standards
- Contribute to the preparation and review of engineering sections of technical reports prepared in accordance with NI 43-101.
- Provide technical input on site infrastructure, process plant structural systems, and civil/structural design considerations for mining projects.
- Ensure engineering assumptions, design criteria, and cost inputs are supported by appropriate technical documentation.
- Support multidisciplinary teams in developing capital cost estimates and infrastructure design for mining studies.
- Where qualified, act as or support a Qualified Person (QP) responsible for structural or infrastructure-related components of mining technical reports.
- Ensure projects meet regulatory and safety standards, including the National Building Code of Canada, CSA S16, CSA A23.3, CSA S304, and others.
- Implement quality control measures to maintain high standards across deliverables.
- Address and resolve compliance-related challenges proactively.
- Site travel may be required on an as needed basis.
5. Strategic Contributions
- Identify opportunities for growth, innovation, and process optimization.
- Support long-term planning by contributing to business development initiatives.
- Participate in setting organizational goals and aligning project strategies accordingly.
6. Mentorship
- Mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence at all levels.
- Build strong relationships with vendors, suppliers, and external partners.

Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil (Structural) Engineering
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in at least one Canadian province
- Minimum of 10–12 years of experience in the heavy industrial sector (preferably mining) within Canada; alternatively, a minimum of 15+ years of experience in the commercial or light industrial sectors within Canada.
- Proficiency in structural analysis software such as RISA 3D, S-Frame, or STAAD.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to effectively coordinate and communicate within a team.
- Demonstrated experience managing and supporting remote teams across multiple locations.
- Proficient in verbal English communication, technical writing, and sketching.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and work within defined schedules and budgets.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and continuous improvement.
