About This Position

Essential Functions
Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and dependable Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Sheet Metal Fabrication to support and advance fabrication operations for power packaging units. This role serves as the primary technical resource for fabrication processes including press brake operations, shearing, metal cutting, and material preparation.

The SME provides hands-on expertise to fabrication team members, assists in troubleshooting complex fabrication challenges, and works with cross-functional teams to improve quality, efficiency, and safety across the production floor. This position will also support training initiatives, mentor team members on best practices, and help develop work instructions and fabrication standards.

The SME may occasionally step in for Leads or Supervisors during vacations or absences.

Accountabilities:
  • Serve as the primary technical resource for sheet metal fabrication processes including press brake, shearing, cutting, and material preparation.
  • Provide guidance to fabrication team members on blueprint interpretation, measurements, layout, and bend calculations.
  • Set up, adjust, and troubleshoot fabrication equipment such as press brakes, shears, and cutting equipment.
  • Install, align, and verify punches, dies, and tooling to ensure proper fabrication tolerances.
  • Assist team members in identifying and resolving fabrication challenges, minimizing scrap and rework.
  • Recommend improvements to fabrication processes, tooling, and workflows to increase efficiency and product quality.
  • Train and onboard new fabrication team members on equipment operation, safety practices, and fabrication techniques.
  • Partner with the training team to develop work instructions, SOPs, and visual job aids for fabrication processes.
  • Serve as a mentor and technical resource to fabrication employees, supporting skill development and cross-training.
  • Ensure consistent adherence to safety practices, equipment maintenance standards, and PPE requirements.
  • Monitor fabrication quality and accuracy by verifying measurements, bend radii, and dimensional tolerances.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams to resolve fabrication-related issues and support production goals.
  • Support lean manufacturing initiatives including process standardization, waste reduction, and 5S improvements.
  • Assist in maintaining fabrication equipment through proper cleaning, lubrication, and preventative maintenance practices.
  • Occasionally work in other areas of the plant to support cross-functional understanding of fabrication processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge/Experience:
• High school diploma or equivalent (required)
• 3+ years of experience in sheet metal fabrication or manufacturing with demonstrated expertise (required)
• Experience operating fabrication equipment such as press brakes, shears, and metal cutting machines (required)
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and work orders
• Strong understanding of bend calculations, tolerances, and dimensional accuracy
• Experience using measuring tools such as calipers, gauges, and inspection tools
• Forklift experience or certification (preferred)
• Ability to train and mentor employees in fabrication processes
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
• Ability to safely lift and maneuver heavy metal materials
• Strong understanding of equipment maintenance and safe machine operation
• Ability to work independently while supporting team-based production goals
