Base hourly rate for CORE members:

  • EMTF > $34.00/hr (averages $750 per 7-day rotation)
  • AEMF > $36.25/hr (averages $765 per 7-day rotation)
  • EMPF > $40.00/hr (averages $850 per 7-day rotation)

Base hourly rate for ROSTER members:

  • EMTF > $32.00/hr (averages $725 per 7-day rotation)
  • AEMF > $34.25/hr (averages $740 per 7-day rotation)
  • EMPF > $37.00/hr (averages $800 per 7-day rotation)

Team members receive additional increases based on relevant experience including Team Leads ($25/day) and FFT1 ($25/day). Additional retention bonus of $25/day for each year served with Adventure Medics. If deployed to California or Alaska, hourly rates may vary due to state specific labor laws.

Preseason training is paid at a separate hourly rate.


Job Description

REMS teams are highly specialized rescue teams of 4 persons assigned to wildland fires throughout the fire season. Their mission is to support the wildland firefighters should they need rescue or medical assistance. They do this utilizing state of the art equipment including Holmatro extrication tools, lightweight rope rescue gear, and a UTV/ATV for patient extrication and team mobility. The REMS program will be staffed by two core teams and an additional roster of approximately 20 qualified candidates. When an assignment occurs, the team responds in less than 24 hours. Fire assignments can last anywhere from 5 days to 30 days depending on the fire size. On occasion the team will move from one fire to another with only 1-2 days of R&R in-between. Fire seasons are typically from June - November with preseason training in April/May.

The following list contains the general roles and responsibilities for REMS Team members:

  • Provide ALS and BLS medical support
  • Provide high and low angle rescue
  • Provide vehicle extrication
  • Extensive knowledge of radio systems, navigation, and wildland fire behavior
  • Safely operates vehicles, including but not limited to trucks, ATVs, UTVs
  • Complete incident, company, and patient paperwork accurately and efficiently
  • Keep in top physical condition with daily work out regiment
  • Attend the three-week REMS training camp and one week Wildland Orientation in Bend, Oregon
  • Meet monthly training minimums through online or in-person classes
  • Perform maintenance on REMS equipment including vehicles, line gear, and rescue equipment
  • Perform other work-related duties as directed by team lead/supervisor

Necessary Qualifications

Current state Paramedic or EMT license in good standing. Core members must have Oregon license.

AND

  • Current BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications
  • Physically fit and capable of passing an arduous WCPT test and additional in-house REMS PT standards
  • Minimum 1-year experience in emergency medicine OR wildland fire OR technical rescue
  • S-130, S-190, L-180
  • ICS-100, ICS-200, IS-700, IS-800

Preferred Qualifications

  • NREMT certification
  • Licensure in an EMS Compact State
  • Rope Rescue Technician
  • Vehicle Extrication Technician
  • Swiftwater Rescue Technician
  • ATV/UTV Operator
  • Wildland FFT1
  • ICT5
  • Single Resource Boss
  • Ski Patrol with lift evacuation experience
  • Climbing Guide experience

All REMS Team Members:

  • Shifts will be a minimum of 16 hours while on assignment (REMS is contracted to incidents as a 24-hour resource)
  • Tentative start date is June 1st, 2026, following completion of training camps and a RRO/RRT course
  • Uniform and equipment provided (wildland boots not provided)

Job Openings:

  • Core REMS member positions
    • Core members will work as a module of one and deploy with the same team of four throughout the season
    • Core members are expected to attend a three-week training session in April/May (date to be determined)
    • Core members must be on 24-hr call back for fire roles throughout the season and have a "zero-strike" policy for turning down a deployment. If this occurs, they may be terminated from the Core Team.
    • Core members may be brought to Bend, OR on standby during times of increased fire activity
  • Rostered REMS positions
    • Rostered members are required to have RRT certification prior to employment
    • Skills will be verified by in-house instructors prior to start of training detail. Candidates must show proficiency in RRT tasks to be considered for the position
    • Rostered members will spend three weeks in Bend learning the Adventure Medics rope rescue equipment and standards, tentatively scheduled for April/May
    • Rostered members will also be eligible for all other wildland fire deployments, including filling in on Core Team deployments
    • Rostered members have a "two strike" policy. If they decline a fire assignment twice (without prior notification), they will be removed from the REMS Roster. Declining a fire assignment a third time may result in termination from the Wildland Program entirely
    • Rostered members may be asked to come to Bend, OR on standby during times of increased fire activity
