This Role:

We are seeking a Packaging Engineer to work on our Advanced Manufacturing Engineering team. This is a hybrid role based out of our Grand Rapids, MI location. The position is expected to travel up to 10% within the US, Canada, and Mexico.

What You Will Do:

The Packaging Engineer will collaborate closely with all levels of leadership to lead the development, implementation, and ongoing improvement of packaging strategies across the company.

  • Be responsible for driving initiatives and foster a culture of improvement across Operations through a deep sense of ownership.
  • Communicate the strategy and goals of specific packaging engineering activities. In addition, you will work with the site leadership to ensure that packaging improvements are rolled out quickly and effectively while maintaining them.
  • Design and develop packaging solutions for new product launches, product changes and production enhancements that are consistent with zero defect level and low product cost.
  • Lead and support continuous improvement and cost savings initiatives related to packaging.

How You Will Do It:

  • Develop and maintain precise documentation pertinent to packaging, including Customer Packaging Portals, Customer Packaging Data Sheets, internal Packaging Documentation, and Bills of Material (BOMs).
  • Oversee change management initiatives related to the packaging transformation, ensuring that employees are engaged, informed, and involved in the process. Work with product managers, manufacturing locations and packaging vendors to spearhead cost reduction initiatives.
  • Foster strong cross-functional collaboration and communication to ensure that packaging initiatives are aligned with business objectives and supported by all stakeholders. Communicate critical issues to upper management and escalate accordingly.
  • Stay up to date with industry’s best practices, trends, testing, and benchmarking data while incorporating relevant insights to enhance the organization's transformation efforts.
  • Collaborate with R&D and Manufacturing engineering on product and process improvement projects. Work with business units, product managers, launch teams, suppliers and logistics to develop and manage costs associated with packing opportunities for potential new business awards. Interface with product managers to ascertain and formulate packaging solutions that fulfill customers objectives for manufacturing, quality, and cost efficiency.
  • Support the cross-functional manufacturing team by contributing to planning, allocating technical resources, assisting with technical issues, and providing guidance on transfers.
  • Work with the quality personnel to utilize 8D problem solving techniques to troubleshoot and resolve packaging issues. Continuously enhance packaging standards to elevate quality and reduce cost.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Engineering degree (BSE, BSME, BSMT, Bachelor in Packaging Engineering)
  • Previous experience including product launch activities encompassing collaboration with packaging vendors and final customers, knowledge of product costing, documentation, ERP, and retail and e-commerce packaging
  • Experience with graphics documentation programs (i.e. Adobe Illustrator.)
  • Current/valid U.S. work authorization without requiring future sponsorship.
