About This Position
As a Radar Technician, you will be responsible for the assembly, installation, maintenance, testing and repair of weather radar equipment and subassembly components used in forecasting and monitoring of weather. Also, as part of your role you will be required to travel both domestically and internationally to provide support for weather radars installed worldwide.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Install, calibrate, and maintain weather radar equipment and subassemblies including radar transmitters, receivers, antennas, cabling and control systems.
- Diagnose and resolve issues pertaining to weather radar systems using advanced testing equipment, hand tools and other specialized equipment.
- Assemble and construct radar systems, subassemblies, cable assemblies, and components following documentation and specifications, ensuring all assemblies adhere to required standards.
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance inspections on fielded radar systems ensuring optimal performance and minimal downtime.
- Conduct testing and quality control measures, perform assembly tests, diagnose malfunctions in equipment, and performing quality assurance checks to verify component functionality and accuracy in accordance with provided documentation.
- Use documentation, including bills of materials, interconnection diagrams, schematics, and test documents to perform troubleshooting and fault identification in radar system subassembly components, identifying defective parts prior to assembly completion.
- Maintain accurate records of construction and testing for production assemblies, documenting any issues encountered and suggesting improvements to enhance product quality.
- Collaborate closely with weather forecasters, meteorological organizations, production staff, quality assurance team members, and engineers to align on production goals and enhance overall product quality and efficiency.
- Update and manage documentation for radar systems and subassemblies, ensuring accuracy, version control, and compliance with organizational standards for accessible and seamless production support.
Desired Experience and Skills:
- Education and Experience in Electronics or Manufacturing - Typically, 2-5 years of experience in electronics, manufacturing, or a related field, preferably in radar, telecommunications, or RF (radio frequency) systems. Associate degree or technical diploma in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, or a related field is desired. Relevant certifications or equivalent experience may also be accepted.
- Proficiency in utilization of hand tools and power tools - Skilled in the use of basic hand tools (e.g., screwdrivers, pliers, wire strippers, crimpers, and soldering irons) for assembly and repair tasks; knowledgeable in proper termination methods, including crimping, soldering, and wire stripping, to ensure secure and reliable connections per industry standards.
- Proficiency in utilization of electronics test equipment – Familiarity with the specialized electronics test equipment and tools used in the assembly, maintenance and repair of weather radar systems.
- Attention to Detail and Quality Orientation - Strong attention to detail, with a focus on ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with industry standards. Proficiency in troubleshooting and critical thinking to diagnose and resolve technical issues. Ability to understand schematics and drawings.
- Communication and Teamwork Skills - Ability to work effectively as part of a team, with strong communication skills for coordinating with production, quality assurance, and engineering departments.
- Time Management and Organizational Skills - Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and handle multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced production environment.
- Commitment to Safety and Compliance - Familiarity with ESD safety, OHSA Electrical Safety standards, Quality Management Standards (ISO 9001/14001), and MIL-STDs applicable to electronics manufacturing.
- Tower Climbing Certification - Must be able to successfully complete a 2-day tower climbing certification course and can work at heights up to 200’.
- Travel Ability – Ability to travel throughout the world for weather radar systems installations and repairs, and candidate must be able to obtain a passport.
