POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

In this role the trainer will provide a professional training experience that will ensure a smooth and effective training program for New Hires and all Production Team Members. This position will work with leadership in preparing, facilitating, monitoring, and evaluating and documenting training activities in the company.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Welding Instructor will perform a variety of routine duties, as needed, to teach structural fabricating, repair, and maintenance, GMAW, FCAW, FCAW (M), SMAW and GTAW welding, oxy/fuel cutting and plasma cutting to students from different backgrounds and skills in the classroom and in the lab, using a variety of teaching methods such as lectures and demonstrations and using audiovisual and technological aids to supplement the presentations.

  • Teaching both safety/welding concepts in the classroom and teaching students the hands-on portion of the skills in the lab.
  • Ensure that the applicable company ISO standards are adhered.
  • Regularly inspects and evaluates students’ workmanship for quality and defects.
  • Identifies and corrects problems and inefficiencies in process, materials, equipment, or skills in the welding lab.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, local, and organizational laws, regulations, guidelines, and best practice programs and curriculum for the employee of the organization for orientation and in-job training to reduce lead times and rework, while increasing the quality of workmanship of the student.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of training and workshops to the employees and develop appropriate modification if needed.
  • Collaborate with the company’s management to identify training needs and schedule appropriate training sessions for employees.
  • Ensure the compliance of the company’s employees to cooperate with standards and procedures during training sessions.
  • Instruct students in subject areas, i.e., use, maintenance, and the safe operation of tools and equipment, codes or regulations related to the welding program.
  • Initiates purchase requisitions for supplies, materials, and equipment following PTT procurement policies and procedures; ensures preventive maintenance program for equipment is in place.
  • Provide support and mentoring for new employees while conducting an evaluation and identifying sections where improvements are needed.
  • Assist in the onboarding training program as needed.
  • Keep detailed records of training performed.
  • Facilitate communications between team members, Dept Leaders, Supervisors, and Human Resources.
  • Provide accurate written documentation on rotations, new hire initial and weekly evaluation forms, ergo improvement forms and method studies.
  • Work closely with the production/group lead to ensure trainee meets productivity goals set for each product worked on.
  • Support continuous improvement activities through collaboration with the Training Department.
  • Travel may be required to meet the needs of the Training Dept.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly classroom and lab area; ensures that waste and byproducts are disposed according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards and procedures.
  • Assist with the training of skills such as crane, fork truck and scissor lift equipment and others, as necessary.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Working knowledge of instructional theory, basic education principles, practices and methodologies, the developmental process, competency-based curricula, and general classroom and lab practices

  • Ability to establish and maintain appropriate level of authority as well as creating an atmosphere of support and confidence for students.

  • High empathy skills and understanding of effective teaching methodologies and the willingness to keep abreast of new techniques in teaching.
  • Have a background in the use of modern technology to develop training modules needed in online platforms.

Working Relationships

Relationships are generally intra-organizational interacting with employees, immediate supervisor, and personnel under his direction. The incumbent maintains the interface between departments allowing for the coordination and execution of production requirements. Contacts with vendors are also maintained.

Requirements:

Education and experience

  • Strong Leadership Skills
  • Basic Microsoft skills (Excel, Word, Outlook) required
  • 3-5 years of Welding in a Manufacturing preferred
  • Previous experience in Lean Manufacturing preferred
  • Vocational Degree preferred or
  • Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in education, Welding Technology, and other related courses
  • Hold a current CWI/CWE certification or have the ability to earn it within a year.

Physical job demands

Ability to lift 60 lbs., work in extreme hot and cold weather, must stand for long periods of time, will be exposed to loud noise levels, operate hand and power tools for long periods of time. Work in an environment with dirt, grease, and dust.

Working conditions

Monday through Friday. Shift, weekend, and overtime may be required.

Safety

Takes appropriate measures to ensure safety in the workplace; attends monthly safety meetings as required, and for new employees and incorporates various principles into daily work activities to ensure compliance; notifies manager immediately (within 24 hours) of workplace injury and ensures appropriate policies and procedures are followed; reports potential safety hazards immediately to manager.
