About This Position

Lead Patient Transporter

Reports to Manager, and/or Director. Leads the Patient Transport team that safely transports patients between all patient care areas, using appropriate body mechanics. Actively leads the frontline team to ensure timely response to transport requests while assisting in expediting the delivery of needed supplies and equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Actively leads the frontline Patient Transport team by assigning, prioritizing, and monitoring transport requests to ensure timely response and efficient patient flow.
  • Transports patients safely between all patient care areas using wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds while demonstrating proper body mechanics.
  • Assists nursing staff with patient transfers and positioning.
  • Ensures patients are comfortable, warm, and safe during transport.
  • Transports specimens to the lab in a timely manner and assists families to designated locations.
  • Assists in expediting the delivery of needed supplies, equipment, and other items from central areas.
  • Maintains cleanliness and proper working condition of transport equipment; reports damaged equipment to engineering.
  • Trains, mentors, and orients new Patient Transporters.
  • Collaborates with nursing and other departments to resolve issues and support throughput.
  • Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the department by completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR), and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Must be a minimum of 17 years of age. Must maintain current CPR certification. Previous patient transport experience in a hospital setting preferred. Lead or supervisory experience strongly preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Basic knowledge of abbreviations and medical terminology.
  • Working knowledge of equipment operation and safe use.
  • Maintain proper body mechanics to prevent injuries.
  • Knowledge of Hospital Policies and Procedures.
  • Strict adherence to aseptic techniques and practices.

Working Conditions

  • At risk for occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
