Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
The RN coordinates, delegates and provides professional care to patients through the laboring process including delivery and recovery in accordance with prescribed, delegated medical regimen and medical center policies. The RN provides patient care based on the nursing process considering the physical and developmental age of the patient in compliance with the organizational P/P and North Carolina State Board of Nursing regulations. He/she is responsible for the clinical management of assigned patients. The RN provides direction and supervision to the LPN, NA, and unit clerical staff to ensure safe and efficient patient care by coordination of the patient care team. The RN maintains current knowledge and skills appropriate to the age of patients served.
The Lactation Consultant is available to serve as a clinical resource in breastfeeding for patients and staff to prevent, recognize, and solve breastfeeding problems. The Lactation Consultant assists with breast assessment, maintain latch, ease engorgement, assistance with soreness, flat or inverted nipples, and discharge feeding plans. She/he functions as a consultant to facilitate education, sharing of knowledge, clinical assistance, and the provision of resources. Keeps abreast of techniques, skills, current practices and regulations appropriate to the age/population of patients served.
EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE:
Minimum Required:
· Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing, with current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina.
· BLS, ACLS, NRP certifications.
· Must be proficient in keyboard operations and basic computer applications.
· Current certification as a Lactation Consultant
· Current certification by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners
· Minimum of 2 years’ experience in breastfeeding education
ADDITIONAL SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
1. Knowledge of current approaches to successful breastfeeding
2. The ability to participate in developing and implementing program strategies that will improve the care of and success of breastfeeding patients thus impacting
Maternal/Neonatal outcomes
3. Strong Customer Excellence skills
4. Strong written and oral communication skills
5. Must be able to vary work schedule
