This is a senior technical leadership role within a cloud-focused database operations environment, responsible for ensuring the performance, reliability, security, and scalability of mission-critical database systems. You will work across large-scale AWS-hosted environments managing high-volume relational databases that support global customers in highly regulated industries. The role combines deep hands-on expertise in database administration with technical leadership, guiding best practices for SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL systems. You will collaborate closely with DevOps, product support, and engineering teams to ensure SLAs are met and systems remain highly available. In this role, you will also drive automation, performance optimization, and continuous improvement across database operations. This is a remote-first position requiring strong ownership, proactive problem-solving, and the ability to operate in a 24/7 on-call environment.

Accountabilities:
  • Manage, maintain, and optimize SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL databases deployed in AWS cloud environments (including RDS and Aurora).
  • Lead database performance tuning, troubleshooting, and incident resolution to ensure SLA compliance and system stability.
  • Design and implement database backup, recovery, and high availability/disaster recovery strategies across enterprise systems.
  • Define and enforce database standards, security practices, and access controls across environments.
  • Automate recurring database operations, monitoring, reporting, and maintenance tasks to improve efficiency and reliability.
  • Oversee database deployments, schema changes, and production/QA release support in coordination with DevOps teams.
  • Monitor and resolve performance issues, analyze root causes, and proactively optimize system behavior.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and provide escalation support for critical database incidents.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate application and infrastructure needs into scalable database solutions.
  • Mentor junior DBAs and contribute to establishing best practices for database operations and support.
Requirements:
  • 10+ years of experience in database administration with strong expertise in SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.
  • 12+ years of overall IT experience in infrastructure or database engineering roles.
  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS database services, including RDS and Aurora PostgreSQL/MySQL.
  • Deep knowledge of performance tuning, indexing, query optimization, and troubleshooting database engine issues.
  • Experience with backup/recovery, HA/DR design, and enterprise-grade database reliability practices.
  • Familiarity with Linux and Windows Server environments.
  • Experience working with cloud infrastructure components such as IAM, EC2, VPC, and storage services.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to collaborate across DevOps, support, and engineering teams.
  • Nice to have: experience in banking, financial services, or other regulated industries.
  • Nice to have: AWS certifications or experience with SSRS and reporting tools.
  • Strong leadership mindset with ability to mentor and influence technical direction.
Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation aligned with senior-level database engineering roles
  • Fully remote work opportunity within Canada
  • Exposure to large-scale, cloud-native SaaS infrastructure supporting global customers
  • Opportunity to work with modern AWS database technologies and enterprise-grade systems
  • Collaborative, engineering-driven environment focused on reliability and performance
  • Long-term career growth within a global software organization
  • Stable, innovation-focused culture backed by a large enterprise software group.
