Sheet Metal CAD/CAM Programming Specialist

Location: Newport News, VA
Employment Type: Full-Time | Contract-to-Hire
Schedule: First Shift (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM EST)
Compensation: Starting at $25.00/hour, with higher pay available based on experience

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled Sheet Metal CAD/CAM Programming Specialist to support manufacturing operations by developing, maintaining, and optimizing CNC programs for precision sheet metal components. This role combines programming expertise, blueprint interpretation, process improvement, and manufacturing support to ensure efficient production and high-quality output.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with CNC punch presses, CAD/CAM software, and sheet metal fabrication processes. This position offers an opportunity to collaborate closely with engineering and production teams while driving continuous improvements in programming efficiency and manufacturing performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create, revise, and maintain CNC programs and associated manufacturing files.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and technical specifications to develop accurate flat-pattern layouts.
  • Convert design concepts and existing components into manufacturable sheet metal parts through reverse-engineering techniques.
  • Collaborate with engineering and production personnel to support new and existing projects.
  • Determine the most efficient machine, tooling, and manufacturing methods for production requirements.
  • Design and specify tooling needs and coordinate procurement activities when necessary.
  • Develop standardized setup documentation, process instructions, and manufacturing guidelines.
  • Utilize CAD/CAM software to improve machine utilization, cycle times, and programming efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot programming and manufacturing issues to minimize downtime and maximize productivity.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives within the fabrication department.

Desired Skills & Qualifications
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and applied manufacturing mathematics.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, blueprints, models, and fabrication documents.
  • Understanding of sheet metal fabrication processes, tooling, bend deductions, quality standards, and production methods.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Dependable work ethic with a commitment to completing tasks thoroughly and accurately.
  • Mechanical aptitude and engineering-related experience are highly valued.
Minimum Requirements
  • At least 3 years of experience programming CNC punch press equipment in a sheet metal fabrication environment.
  • Experience with CNC laser programming is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of fabrication and machining practices, material properties, production tooling, and CNC manufacturing principles.
  • Ability to evaluate manufacturing challenges and develop practical, cost-effective solutions.
  • Experience integrating established manufacturing methods with process improvements.
Technical Requirements
  • Hands-on experience using SolidWorks for sheet metal design and fabrication.
  • Working knowledge of CAMWorks or similar CAM software.
  • Experience with computerized nesting software, preferably SigmaNEST.
  • Ability to read, edit, troubleshoot, and optimize G-code programs.
  • Familiarity with CNC production processes and technical troubleshooting.
