Who We Are

Established in 1884, The Donohoe Companies is the Washington, DC region’s oldest full-service real estate company. Over the past 140 years, Donohoe has grown into one of the largest real estate companies in the area, encompassing over 1,500 employees across six divisions: Donohoe Construction Company, Donohoe Commercial Real Estate, Complete Building Services, Donohoe Hospitality Services, Donohoe Development Company, and Borger Residential.

In our Corporate Office, you can look forward to complimentary coffee/tea/cold brew, employee engagement events, convenient lunch options, the fan-favorite Bagel Fridays and more!

What We're Looking For

We are looking for an experienced HR professional to join our team as Human Resources Manager. In this role, you will be the go-to resource for employees and managers across the Company — guiding the full employee life cycle, from recruitment and onboarding through performance, development, and separation. You'll work closely with business leaders and HR colleagues to support a strong, consistent employee experience and help the Company stay compliant, competitive, and engaged.

Why This Role Matters

People are at the center of everything we do, and this role is where that commitment comes to life. As the HR Manager, you'll be the person employees turn to when something matters and the partner managers rely on to make good decisions about their teams — directly shaping whether people feel supported, treated fairly, and set up to succeed.

Come join us to experience all the reasons why we were voted one of The Washington Business Journal’s Best Places to Work!

Annual Salary: $90,000 - $100,00.00

Responsibilities

What You'll Do
  • Serve as the primary resource for employee questions and concerns, responding with sound judgment and a commitment to fair treatment.
  • Manage employee relations matters — investigations, corrective action, conflict resolution — and advise managers on appropriate, legal, policy-aligned actions.
  • Lead the new hire onboarding experience, including background checks, payroll documentation, I-9 verification, Day 1 coordination, and new hire orientation.
  • Maintain accurate employee records in the HRIS system; respond to employment verifications, unemployment claims, and garnishment requests.
  • Lead the performance management process, partnering with managers on consistent execution of reviews and ongoing feedback.
  • Stay current on federal and state employment law (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, paid leave) and share relevant updates with leadership and the HR team.
  • Bring forward recommendations for engagement and retention strategies that support the Company's competitive position.
  • Partner with business leaders to identify talent and competency gaps and develop solutions that strengthen organizational capability.
  • Manage the full recruitment cycle within the ATS — requisitions, candidate flow, hiring manager coordination, and offer preparation.
  • Develop clear, timely HR communications on policies, procedures and HR initiatives.
  • Serve as a reliable resource on company policies and benefits; partner with the VP of HR on complex policy matters.
  • Maintain compliance with employment law posting requirements across all site locations.
  • Manage the annual service awards program and contribute to cross-functional HR initiatives including open enrollment and wellness programs.

Qualifications
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years of HR or related experience.
  • Proficiency in HRIS platforms and Microsoft Office; advanced Excel skills required. Payroll experience highly desirable.
  • Solid knowledge of federal and state employment law.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities independently and follow through with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication skills — able to convey ideas clearly, navigate sensitive conversations, and build trust across all levels of the organization.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Discretion and professionalism in handling confidential information.

Preferred:

  • HR certification (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR) is a plus
  • Background in construction, real estate, hospitality, or facilities management
  • Bilingual (Spanish) skills

This is a highly visible role based in our Corporate Office and requires regular interaction with employees and stakeholders across multiple locations. As the primary HR resource for employees, regular onsite presence is required. Strong organizational skills, adaptability, and responsiveness are essential. The role requires the ability to manage a high volume of work, shifting between detailed tasks and urgent requests throughout the day.
