Job Description
The Evergreen School, an independent school serving highly capable students in preschool through 8th grade, is currently accepting applications for a Middle School Social Studies Teacher.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Evergreen School is seeking an engaging, collaborative, and student-centered educator to join our Middle School faculty. We are looking for someone with a passion for history, social studies, and civic engagement who is eager to inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and meaningful discussion among highly capable learners.
This position will primarily teach 7th Grade Social Studies, with the possibility of teaching additional middle school social studies courses depending on departmental needs. The successful candidate will possess strong content knowledge in United States History and Global Studies and demonstrate an ability to design and facilitate engaging learning experiences that challenge students intellectually while supporting their individual learning needs.
The ideal candidate understands the importance of developing a social studies curriculum that reflects a diversity of perspectives, experiences, and voices. They are committed to fostering an inclusive learning environment where students develop historical thinking skills, engage in thoughtful inquiry, and make meaningful connections between the past and present. The successful candidate will also serve as a middle school advisor or elective teacher and contribute positively to the collaborative culture of the school community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach middle school social studies courses, primarily serving 7th grade students, through engaging, developmentally appropriate, and academically challenging instruction.
- Design, adapt, and implement curriculum, lesson plans, assessments, and learning experiences that align with departmental goals and the school's educational philosophy.
- Create opportunities for inquiry-based, discussion-driven, project-based, and experiential learning that encourage critical thinking and student engagement.
- Develop and implement curriculum that reflects diverse perspectives, cultures, and historical experiences.
- Assess student learning through a variety of formative and summative measures and provide timely, meaningful feedback to students and families.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate learning goals, expectations, and outcomes clearly.
- Serve as a middle school advisor and support students' academic, social, and emotional growth.
- Collaborate regularly with grade-level teams, department colleagues, learning specialists, counselors, and administrators to support student success.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, growth, and needs.
- Interpret and implement educational evaluations and collaborate with learning support professionals to provide appropriate accommodations and support.
- Establish and maintain positive classroom communities characterized by respect, inclusion, accountability, and high expectations.
- Utilize educational technology and digital learning tools to enhance instruction and student engagement.
- Attend and participate in school events, faculty meetings, department meetings, parent conferences, Open House, and professional development opportunities.
- Prioritize and uphold student health, safety, and well-being at all times.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to all school policies and professional expectations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

- Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree and WA teaching certificate preferred.
- Demonstrated experience teaching middle school social studies, history, humanities, or related disciplines.
- Strong content knowledge in United States History and Global Studies; experience teaching both is preferred. Knowledge of the C3 Framework is a plus.
- Experience developing curriculum and instructional practices that reflect diverse perspectives and experiences.
- Experience working with highly capable and/or twice-exceptional students is preferred.
- Skills and Abilities
- Collaborative approach to teaching an engaging and challenging program for highly capable students.
- Comfortable with student-centered learning spaces and techniques such as differentiated instruction, real-world applications, and inquiry-based approaches.
- Familiarity with and/or a background in independent schools.
- Strong grasp of teaching responsibilities and reflective teaching practices.
- Ability to support the school’s mission while managing curriculum planning, teaching, collaboration, and parent communication.
- Establish a healthy rapport with students.
- Effective collaboration with colleagues, sharing and learning within a team setting.
- Strong cultural competency and ability to work with diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and appropriately challenge highly capable students.
- Clear and effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Comfortable using educational technology in learning environments.
- Maintain confidentiality and integrity while building constructive working relationships.
- Punctuality and strong attendance record.
- Ability to complete work thoroughly, accurately, and in a timely manner.

- Demonstrated success in student-centered and inquiry-based teaching methods.
Working Conditions:
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds in connection with job duties such as assisting with classroom setup or moving materials.
- Ability to stand, sit, and move comfortably throughout classrooms and school hallways for extended periods.
- Ability to climb stairs, navigate uneven surfaces, and escort students as needed between locations within and outside school buildings.
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including inclement weather.
- Evening and weekend work may be required at times.
Position Details:
This is an exempt, 1.0 FTE full-time, benefits-eligible position. The salary range for an Evergreen School teacher is $71,500 to $123,920 per year, depending on degree(s) and years of experience.
