Job Title: B-Shift Laser Operator

Job Type: Full-time

Reports to: Fabrication Manager

Job Summary:

The Laser Operator is responsible for setting up, programming, and operating laser cutting machines to produce parts according to production specifications. This position plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of laser cutting processes, maintaining the quality of parts, and meeting production deadlines. The ideal candidate has experience operating laser equipment, strong technical skills, and a keen eye for detail.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Laser Machine Operation:
    • Set up, adjust, and operate laser cutting machines (e.g., CO2, fiber lasers) to cut, etch, or engrave metal, plastic, or other materials.
    • Program machines using CNC or manual programming techniques based on production drawings and blueprints.
    • Load and unload materials onto the laser machine and monitor the cutting process to ensure proper operation.
  • Quality Control:
    • Inspect finished parts and products to ensure they meet design specifications and quality standards.
    • Make necessary adjustments to machine settings and processes to maintain precision and consistency.
    • Use calipers, micrometers, and other measuring tools to verify part dimensions.
  • Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
    • Perform routine maintenance on laser equipment, including cleaning lenses, replacing worn parts, and calibrating the machine.
    • Identify and troubleshoot any operational issues with the laser machine, making minor repairs or adjustments as needed.
    • Work with maintenance staff for more complex repairs or machine upgrades.
  • Safety Compliance:
    • Follow all safety protocols related to the operation of laser equipment, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Ensure that laser systems are operating within safety parameters to prevent accidents or malfunctions.
    • Maintain a clean and organized work area to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Documentation & Reporting:
    • Record production information, such as machine settings, production counts, and material usage, to maintain accurate records.
    • Report any issues, malfunctions, or production delays to the supervisor or maintenance team.
    • Maintain documentation of routine maintenance and any repairs performed on the equipment.
  • Process Improvement:
    • Collaborate with production engineers and team members to improve laser cutting processes and enhance product quality.
    • Suggest ways to optimize machine performance, reduce waste, and increase production efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Vocational or technical training in machine operation or laser technology preferred.
  • Experience:
    • 1-3 years of experience operating laser cutting machines or CNC machines.
    • Familiarity with reading blueprints, CAD drawings, and CNC programming is preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in operating laser cutting machines and understanding machine programming.
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce precise and accurate work.
    • Basic understanding of quality control methods and tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers).
    • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and technical issues with machinery.
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and work in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25-50lbs.
  • Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with CNC programming and operation of automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Knowledge of different types of lasers (e.g., fiber, CO2) and their applications in manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems for tracking production and material usage.
