Job Description
Position Summary
The Development Officer is responsible for overseeing all donor relations, fundraising initiatives, and grant development activities for the organization. This position plays a key role in expanding and sustaining financial resources through individual giving, corporate partnerships, foundation support, and strategic communications. The Development Officer also ensures consistent donor messaging, supervises agency communications content, and leads grant research and application efforts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
Fundraising & Donor Relations
• Comply with HRC Work Culture Building Blocks and follow HRC Code of Conduct.
• Develop and oversee the organization’s annual fundraising plan.
• Achieve an annual fundraising goal of $300,000 through individual, corporate, foundation, and campaign contributions.
• Identify and cultivate individual, corporate, and foundation donors.
• Maintain strong and consistent communication with donors, including acknowledgment letters and updates.
• Secure commitments of participation or financial support from donors and partners.
• Develop fundraising strategies that maximize contributions and reduce costs.
• Collaborate on planning donor receptions, fundraising events, and engagement activities.
Grant Research & Grant Writing
• Conduct ongoing research to identify new grant opportunities at the local, state, federal, and foundation levels.
• Prepare, write, and submit grant proposals, renewal applications, and required reports.
• Maintain a grant calendar and ensure all submissions and reporting deadlines are met.
• Cultivate positive relationships with grant funders and assist with site visits or funder meetings.
Marketing, Communications & Public Relations
• Manage agency CRM and reconcile donations with accounting department.
• Oversee messaging and donor communications on all platforms, including “Thank you” letters.
• Support and supervise agency social media content to align with fundraising and branding goals.
• Review and revise the monthly newsletter and annual Impact Report.
• Produce or edit marketing and communications materials (presentations, training materials, brochures, etc.).
• Review the agency’s website regularly and provide recommendations to enhance fundraising visibility.
• Build relationships with local media outlets and support media engagements.
• Manage third-party marketing or communications vendors as needed.
Strategic Development Responsibilities
• Maintain the organization’s brand identity, including logos, signage, and voice.
• Research donor-relations strategies and trends to strengthen fundraising effectiveness.
• Track and analyze donor activity, campaign progress, and communications performance metrics.
• Support development team planning and organizational growth initiatives.
Administrative & Operational Duties
• Ensure timely and accurate funder reporting.
• Maintain donor records and data accuracy within the agency donor management system.
• Participate in internal meetings and strategic planning sessions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Performance Expectations
• Raise a minimum of $300,000 annually.
• Submit all grants and required reporting by deadlines.
• Maintain positive donor engagement and measurable increases in donor retention.
• Produce monthly communications dashboard and quarterly fundraising progress updates.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
• Bachelor’s degree preferred in Communications, Marketing, Nonprofit Management, Business, or related field.
• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising or development.
• Demonstrated success in fundraising, grant writing, and donor cultivation.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
• Experience with donor management systems and social media platforms.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation may be required
• Must be able to pass Background check
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
• Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred
